Dazhao Temple
Dazhao Temple
Overview
Located in Hohhot, the capital city of North China's Inner Mongolia autonomous region, Dazhao Temple—also known as Wuliang Si (Infinite Temple) in Mandarin—is a Buddhist monastery constructed in 1579.
It is also called Yinfo Si (Silver Buddha Temple) as there is a rare silver statue of Sakyamuni that measures 2.5 meters high in the temple.
The construction work on the temple was completed in 1580 during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). It is the oldest Gelugpa temple in Inner Mongolia.
There was a major reconstruction in 1640, although much of the original architectural style was retained.
Dazhao Temple is a well-known tourist attraction both at home and abroad. The splendid temple building, precious cultural relics and artwork, as well as the mysterious Buddhist dance and music, constitute a unique temple culture.
Architecture
The temple complex covers 370,000 square meters and contains various cultural relics, among which silver Buddha statues, carvings of dragons and frescoes of the Ming Dynasty are the most famous. Other historic artifacts such as umbrellas, lamps and censer used by the emperors of the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911) are also on display at the temple. There are also religious instruments, masks and thangka, a special Tibetan Buddhism painting style.
Preservation and Tourism
The local government made great efforts to develop the temple into a national 4A grade scenic site where visitors can enjoy historic, religious, ethnic and folk cultures. In 2016, it was chosen as a national 4A grade scenic site.
